Not satisfied with the commonly held notion that early colonial farmers brought ecological degradation to the Concord area, Donahue harbored his thoughts for many years, in the meantime pursuing both academic studies in history and the running of a nonprofit community farm. Then, in the late 1980s, Geographic Information Systems mapping came along, and he could make the maps of his dreams of landholdings and topography over time. He finds that those early farmers nurtured a sustainable ecological balance and that the problems in the environment began with changing economic and social forces in the 19th century.
